Port Alberni First Nation Claims Victory After Major Clean Up at Tire Dumping Site

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites http PORT ALBERNI – The Tseshaht First Nation says its voice has been heard after raising concerns about an abandoned tire recycling plant near its traditional territory. Tires were stacked metres high, some floating in area creeks for decades when First Nations leaders said no more. Last summer band members contacted Vancouver Island media and the provincial government saying this situation just kilometres from a reserve with a population of 700 is unacceptable. Today the band announced a collaborative effort between the province, First Nation, university scientists and local business leaders has kick started a clean up. So far more than 4000 small car tires have been removed and recycled, while larger industrial tires are being used to create a barrier wall around the crown land.
